My family loves to play outdoor games together, so here you’ll find some suggestions for the best outdoor family games. Our kids are 7 years apart, so finding games they both enjoy is a challenge, but all of these games pass the test. Playing games together is a way that our family bonds, and some of our favorites are outdoor games. We love game night even more now that we play outdoor games as well as board games together.
If your kids are active and have trouble sitting still, outdoor games may be the way to go. My boys are extremely active, but they enjoy these types of games and do well with them. They love board games as well, but sometimes they just need to be up and moving around.
Below you’ll find some traditional outdoor games such as horse shoes or croquet, but you’ll also find some new ones like flickin’ chicken….yes, flickin’ chicken is a real game and it is awesome!

Best Outdoor Family Games
Flickin’ Chicken, need I say more? Ok, just in case I do… Everyone gets their own rubber chicken and you take turns flinging it at this frisbee like target across the yard. You count your strokes up as if you’re playing golf and when everyone’s chicken is touching the target that’s the end of the round. Now, must I say more?
Bean Bag Toss or Corn Hole – Fun For Tailgating!
My whole family enjoys our bean bag toss game. I don’t know who likes it more, my 6 year old or my husband. Our 13 year old is the typical teen that sometimes wants something to do with us and sometimes he just wants us to go away, and even he loves our corn hole game. It’s great for tailgating too!
Ladderball or Ladder Toss Game
This Ladderball or Ladder Toss Game is a great choice for an outdoor family game. My family enjoys games, but games that involve throwing anything are a favorite. My boys love ladderball! My youngest is 6 and my oldest is 13, so it’s great to be able to find something they both enjoy doing together with us as a family.
Disk Golf Is So Much Fun!
If you live somewhere that has a disc golf course, I highly recommend getting a disc golf set and trying it. If you’re not lucky enough to have access to a course, the mini Frisbee golf set below (in the middle) is a great option.
Croquet – A fun family outdoor game
Croquet is a traditional game, but it doesn’t get old. Croquet is a great option for an outdoor family game. We had a croquet set when I was a kid and we loved playing.
Horseshoes Make Great Outdoor Family Games
Horseshoes is a lot of fun. We had a set at my papas when I was younger and all of us kids loved playing with it. It’s a game that used to be played at family reunions as well. Horseshoes is on the list for us to purchase, I think my boys will love it!
