There are many options for ride on toys for toddlers and younger kids, but what about ride on toys for older kids? Over the years my oldest son has outgrown his outdoor toys, especially ride ons, much sooner than he would have liked. Scooters have always seemed to be the solution to our problem because of how many different ones there are, but scooters are only the beginning. There are several great options below including skateboards, 4 wheelers, bicycles, and more.
If your child is anything like mine, getting him or her outside and away from the video games or phone can be a challenge. I try to provide my son with a variety of outdoor games and toys so that he’ll want to be outside and I won’t have to be the bad guy, and ride on toys have always been a hit. The age of your child and his interests will play a big part in what you choose, but I’ve included several options and they’re something for everyone.

Big Wheels For Big Kids
The coolest ride on toy for older kids in my opinion are these Razor 360, which are basically big wheels for big kids that can spin in circles and drift. There is a weight limit of 160 lbs on these and are for ages 3 and up, so your kids will be sure to get a lot of use out of these. Parent reviews say that the ideal age would be 5 – 10 years old, but that teenagers seem to love them too! I guess it really depends on the size of your teen. Since the picture doesn’t do these justice, I’ve added a video below so you can see them in action.
Ezyroller Ride On Toys For Older Kids
These easy roller ride ons are great ride on toys for older kids. They sit in the seat and power it by moving their feet. They can be adjusted as your child grows, which makes it an excellent buy. These are great for using alone or for racing against others. There are a ton of colors to choose from, and if you click on the product you can watch a video right on Amazon so you can see how it works. Both of my boys are asking for one of these right now.
Scooters Are Great Ride On Toys For Older Kids
Scooters are great ride on toys for older kids. Over the years our oldest son has spent many hours riding one scooter or another. He’s had a variety of scooters and has had both kid powered and battery powered ones. My oldest is now 13 and I let him choose the 3 scooters to feature. He thinks these are all unique and and fun! These 3 are also well made and will last for a very long time. The main thing to think about when choosing a scooter is the weight limit, so be sure to choose one with a weight limit that will allow for growth. If your child is too heavy for a scooter a skateboard or bike may be a better option.
Roller Kneeboard Is a Fun Skateboard Alternative
When I saw this I thought it was a great alternative for a skateboard. Both of my boys (ages 6 and 13) are asking for his toy, so I think it will be a shared Christmas present…possibly even one for each of them. To tell you the truth, I want to try this one. It’s made of skateboard decking and although there’s not a weight limit listed, reviews say that adults and kids have used it. One word of caution on this toy, you’ll want to show your child how to distribute weight where they don’t lean too far forward to minimize tipping it over while playing.
Skateboards Are Great Ride Ons For Older Kids
Skateboarding is a fun activity for older kids. I loved skateboarding and it’s the one think I’d love to learn to do again. I got started with it when I was in 3rd grade and skated for a few years until we moved out of town and I didn’t have sidewalks anymore. People of all ages can learn to skateboard, and it’s popular with teens right now. Skateboarding has more diversity now then it ever has before and it keeps growing. A skateboard is a great “toy” for older kids!
The Ripstik is the one in the middle and I am in love with it. It looks challenging, but so cool once you get the hang of it. There are a ton of instructional videos on youtube that can help you learn how to use it.
Bicycles For Older Kids
Bicycles are a great choice for anyone of any age, and it may be the best option for an older child. A quality bicycle will last for years, and no matter what size and weight you are you can find a bicycle that’s right for you (or your child). And older child will be able to ride their bike to a friends house or even to school, and it’s also something that the whole family can enjoy. Many places have bike trails available so that kids don’t have to ride on the road. Our boys love to use the paved bike trails we have here.
4 Wheeler, The Big Daddy Of Ride On Toys
4 Wheelers are quite an investment, but they’re something that your child will get years of use out of. 4 wheelers are fun for older kids, teens, and adults. My oldest son rides his dads 4 wheeler when he visits him and he always has a good time. We plan on purchasing one when we move out of town. Both of the ones I’ve chosen to feature are great options.
